The Cerritos College women's
tennis team was finally able to open their season
after several matches were cancelled due to bad
weather. The Falcons were defeated at home on
Thursday by Saddleback College, 6-3. Next up for the
team will be a match at powerful Orange Coast
College at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
Of the three wins collected by the Falcons in their
loss to the Gauchos, two of them were due to
forfeits, while one came in a singles match.
Sophomore
Asha Badal
(Mayfair HS) posted a solid 6-1, 6-1 win in
the #5 singles position. In the other four singles
matches, Cerritos was swept in two sets Sophomore
Jelanie DeGuzman (Downey HS),
who was inserted as the #1 singles player, was
defeated, 1-6, 0-6, while the next three singles
players are all freshmen.
In doubles action, DeGuzman teamed with freshman
Esther Lee (Cerritos HS) in
the #1 doubles match and lost a hard-fought match,
6-8. In the other doubles match, freshman
Sonia
Gutierrez (Norwalk HS) teamed
with freshman
Jessica
Zaldivar (Pioneer HS) and were
defeated, 4-8.
