The Cerritos College
women's tennis team had to go all the way down
to San Diego to pick up their first win of the
season, as they posted a 7-2 non-conference
victory against San Diego Mesa College on
Thursday. With the win, the Falcons are now 1-2
on the season and will look for a win at home
when they host Glendale at noon on Friday.
The Falcons were the
beneficiary of three forfeit wins against the
Olympians, who did not have a full squad. As a
result, Cerritos picked up wins in the #5 and #6
singles positions, as well as in the #3 doubles
match. However, the team did receive three
convincing wins in singles play, with freshman
Sonia Gutierrez (Norwalk HS)
leading the way with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the #2
singles match. She was joined by sophomores
Jelaine DeGuzman (Downey HS) and
MaryJane Bernardo (Kennedy HS),
who came away with 6-2, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-0 wins,
respectively. Playing her first match of the
season in the #1 singles spot, freshman
Esther
Lee (Cerritos HS) dropped a 1-6,
1-6 decision.
In doubles play, Gutierrez
teamed with sophomore
Asha
Badal (Mayfair HS) to record an
8-4 win, while DeGuzman and Lee dropped a 4-8
match in the top spot.
