The Cerritos College women's
tennis team had one singles player and one
doubles team win consolation championships
at the Southwestern Tournament, which was
held this past weekend in Chula Vista.
Competing in the #5 singles competition,
sophomore
Asha Badal (Mayfair HS)
dropped her first match, which sent her to
the consolation round, where she won two
matches to capture the consolation
championship. The consolation rounds were
one set played to 10 and Badal posted 10-0
and 10-4 victories.
As for the
doubles team of freshman
Jessica Zaldivar (Pioneer HS)
and sophomore
Alyssa Rojas (Warren HS),
they also lost their first match and went on
to record a 10-2 win in the semi-finals and
a 10-4 victory in the consolation
championship match of the #3 doubles
competition.
Four of
the Falcon players won their first round
singles matches, but were defeated in their
semi-final match, while the team of
sophomore
Mary Jane Bernardo (Kennedy HS)
and
Jelaine DeGuzman (Downey HS)
won their first round doubles match in
Division II, but were defeated in their next
two matches. First round singles winners
included freshman
Sonia Gutierrez (Norwalk HS),
DeGuzman, Berrardo and Zaldivar.
The Falcons will resume South Coast Conference action on
Tuesday when they host Mt. San Antonio
College at 2:00 p.m.
