With just one match remaining
in their South Coast Conference competition
at home against Mt. San Antonio College on
Tuesday, the Cerritos College women's tennis
team looked to sophomore
Jelaine DeGuzman (Downey HS)
to secure the victory. After winning the
first set, 6-3, DeGuzman was unable to hold
off Louise Miclat, and dropped the next two
sets, 4-6, 3-6. The end result was a 4-3
loss to the Mounties, which dropped the
Falcons to 1-1 in the conference and 3-3
overall. The team will now host Victor
Valley College in a non-conference match at
2:00 p.m. on Thursday.
DeGuzman
did make the second game close after falling
behind 3-0, but saw Miclat recover and win
the second game. She rode that momentum in
the third game and picked up the victory.
Cerritos picked up an easy 6-0 6-0 win in
the #2 position from freshman
Sonia Gutierrez (Norwalk HS),
while sophomore
Asha Badal (Mayfair HS) had
little trouble in her #5 match, 6-1, 6-0.
The other singles win came from sophomore
Mary Jane Bernardo (Kennedy HS),
who recorded a 6-2, 6-3 win in the #4
position.
The
important doubles point went to the
Mounties, as they won the #1 doubles match,
8-4 over DeGuzman and freshman
Esther Lee (Cerritos HS). The
#3 match, which was an 8-6 victory by Mt.
San Antonio, came in a thrilling match
against freshman
Jessica Zaldivar (Pioneer HS)
and sophomore
Alyssa Rojas (Warren HS). The
lone victory for the Falcons was recorded by
Gutierrez and Badal, who came away with an
8-5 victory.
