In a non-conference match
against Victor Valley College on Thursday
afternoon, the Cerritos College women's
tennis team registered a convincing 8-1 win
to run their season record to 4-3. The
Falcons will now resume South Coast
Conference play on Tuesday with a 2:00 p.m.
match at El Camino College.
The
Falcons opened up the contest by sweeping
the doubles matches, which set the stage for
their singles success. In the #3 spot,
freshman
Melody Elizarraraz (John Glenn HS)
teamed with sophomore
Mary Jane Bernardo (Kennedy HS)
for an 8-0 win, while freshman
Sonia Gutierrez (Norwalk HS)
and sophomore
Asha Badal (Mayfair HS)
posted an 8-1 win. In the top doubles match,
sophomore
Jelaine DeGuzman (Downey HS)
and freshman
Esther Lee (Cerritos HS) came
away with an 8-4 victory.
Five of the six Falcons won their singles matches, with all
of them being in straight sets. In the #5
and #6 spots, Badal and freshman
Jessica Zaldivar (Pioneer HS) each posted
6-1, 6-1 wins, while Bernardo (6-3, 6-0),
DeGuzman (6-3, 6-1) and Gutierrez (6-2, 6-2)
each registered wins.
