With the match eventually
coming down the the #3 singles result
between the Cerritos College and El Camino
College women's tennis teams on Tuesday, the
Falcons looked to be in position to see the
match extend to a third and deciding set.
Sophomore
Jelaine DeGuzman (Downey HS),
who dropped the first set, 4-6 to Latifa
Brown, led 5-3 in the second set. But, Brown
went on to win the next four games, which
resulted in a 4-3 South Coast Conference
loss for Cerritos. With the setback, the
Falcons dropped to 4-4 on the year and 1-2
in conference play. The team will look to
rebound on Thursday, when they finish their
suspended match at home against Long Beach
City College.
After the
Falcons dropped two of the three doubles
matches to the Warriors, they knew they
needed to win four of the six singles
matches to pull out the win. In doubles
play, freshman
Sonia Gutierrez (Norwalk HS)
teamed with sophomore
Asha Badal (Mayfair HS), and
they came away with an 8-5 win. However, the
Falcons dropped the other two doubles
matches, 1-8 and 5-8, which put them in the
position they needed to win the four singles
matches.
Gutierrez got the job done in the #2 spot with a 6-0, 6-0
win, while sophomore
Mary Jane Bernardo (Kennedy HS)
posted a 6-3, 6-4 win at #4. The same was
turned in by freshman
Jessica Zaldivar (Pioneer HS)
at #6, as she won, 6-2, 6-1. Badal, who lost
a close first set, 5-7 in the #5 position,
dropped a 3-6 decision in the second set,
while freshman
Esther Lee (Cerritos HS) was
swept, 0-6, 0-6 in the top singles spot.
DeGuzman was the final player on the court
for the Falcons, but was unable to hold off
the surge by Brown and suffered the loss.
