When the Cerritos College and
Long Beach City College women's tennis teams
attempted to play their South Coast
Conference match back on February 20, they
were halted due to rain. The two teams
finished their match on Thursday, with the
Falcons coming away with a 5-2 win, which
evens their conference record at 2-2, while
they are now 5-4 on the season. The team
will now host Marymount College on Tuesday
at 2:00 p.m. In their first meeting, the
Falcons posted a 6-1 victory.
All five
wins against the Vikings came in singles
play, while all three doubles matches were
close. Posting solid wins in singles play
were sophomore
Jelaine DeGuzman (Downey HS)
in the #3 position with a 6-0, 6-2 win,
while sophomore
Asha Badal (Mayfair HS) won
her match, 6-2, 6-2. As for sophomore
Alyssa Rojas (Warren HS), her
#6 match was completed with a 6-1, 6-2
victory. Those who were extended, but still
posted wins included freshman
Sonia Gutierrez (Norwalk HS),
who started fast by winning the first set,
6-1, but had to fight in the second set and
came away with a 7-6 (7-2) victory.
Sophomore
Mary Jane Bernardo (Kennedy HS)
surrendered the first set, 4-6, but came
back strong and won the second set, 6-1. In
the third set, she broke a 6-6 tie with a
7-0 tiebreaker and came away with the 7-6
win.
Rojas and freshman
Jessica Zaldivar (Pioneer HS)
teamed for an 8-4 win in their #3 doubles
match, but the other two teams lost by a
close margin. Gutierrez and Badal fell, 7-9,
while in the top doubles match, DeGuzman and freshman
Esther Lee (Cerritos HS)
lost, 6-8.
