On the strength of their 4-3
South Coast Conference win at Long Beach
City College on Thursday afternoon, the
Cerritos College women's tennis won their
third straight match. The Falcons are now
7-4 overall and 4-2 in conference action.
They will now travel to Mt. San Antonio for
a 2:00 p.m. conference match on Tuesday.
Although
they did not pick up the doubles point, the
Falcons were able to win four of the six
singles matches to pull out the team
victory. Freshman
Sonia Gutierrez (Norwalk HS)
improved her record in the #2 spot to 9-1 on
the season after her 6-3, 6-2 victory, while
sophomore
Jelaine DeGuzman (Downey HS)
picked up a solid 6-1, 6-0 victory at #3.
She is now 7-3 on the year in that spot. The
other two wins came in the #5 and #6
positions, as sophomore
Asha Badal (Mayfair HS) and
freshman
Alyssa Rojas (Warren HS)
posted victories. Badal cruised to a 6-2,
6-2 win, while Rojas broke serve late in
both matches to record her 6-4. 7-5 victory,
which secured the win for the Falcons.
In doubles competition, Rojas teamed with freshman
Melody Elizarraraz (John Glenn HS)
for an 8-1 win in the #3 spot. Gutierrez and
Badal suffered a close 8-6 loss in the #2
spot, while in singles, sophomore
Mary Jane Bernardo (Kennedy HS)
dropped a three set match, 4-6, 6-4, 1-6.
