The Cerritos College women's
tennis team not only avenged one of their
South Coast Conference losses on Tuesday,
they held on to a portion of first place.
With their 5-2 win over Mt. San Antonio
College, the Falcons (8-4 overall) are now
5-2 in conference action and currently hold
a half game lead over Long Beach City
College and El Camino College, who had their
match shortened by rain yesterday. The
winner of that match will join Cerritos at
5-2, while the Falcons close out the regular
season at home next Tuesday against El
Camino, with a shot at the championship on
the line.
The
Falcons, who have struggled to earn the
doubles team point, found themselves in a
similar position against the Mounties. After
freshman
Sonia Gutierrez (Norwalk HS)
and sophomore
Asha Badal (Mayfair HS)
posted their 8-1 win in the #2 doubles
position, close losses were handed to the
top doubles team of sophomore
Jelaine DeGuzman (Downey HS)
and freshman
Jessica Zaldivar (Pioneer HS),
8-5 , as well as freshman
Melody Elizarraraz (John Glenn HS)
and freshman
Alyssa Rojas (Warren HS), who
were defeated, 9-7.
That set up the singles action, where the Falcons picked up
their five wins to secure the team victory.
Zaldivar, who had been a solid addition to
the #6 position, remained undefeated with a
6-3, 6-3 win, while Badal (6-1, 6-4) won at
#5. DeGuzman had little trouble in her #3
match, winning, 6-2, 6-0, while sophomore
Mary Jane Bernardo (Kennedy HS)
registered a 6-0, 6-1 victory. As for
Gutierrez, she fought off a close first set
by winning, 7-5 and then responded with a
6-1 win in the second set. Freshman
Esther Lee (Cerritos HS), the
top singles player, had to default due to an
injury.
