The Cerritos College women's tennis team finished off their undefeated South Coast Conference season on Thursday with a 6-1 victory over Long Beach City College. The Falcons (15-4 overall, 9-0 SCC), champions for the second year in a row and fourth time in the last five years, will now compete in the conference tournament, which will start Tuesday, April 15 at Long Beach City.
The win over the Vikings didn't come without a couple of close calls, as the Falcons were extended at the top of the singles ladder. Sophomore Annika You (John Marshall HS/Cal Poly Pomona) came back to defeat Courtney Petero, 1-6, 7-6 (5), 10-6 to avenge her loss in the last round. Sophomore Steffanie Mendez (Bellflower HS) also had her hands full in her third match of the year in the #2 position. She battled for a 6-3, 7-6 (5) win over Elida Gudiel, while two of the other three wins were straight set wins, while freshman Cristina Sanchez (La Mirada HS) received a default victory at #6.
Both Shamariah DeRojas (La Mirada HS), who posted a 6-0, 6-4 win, and freshman Tania Garcia (Huntington Park HS) with her 6-2. 6-4 victory, helped secure the team victory for the Falcons.
In doubles play, Cerritos received a default win at #3, while Mendez and Sanchez posted an 8-3 win, with You and sophomore Sonia Gutierrez (Norwalk HS) still unable to overcome Petero and Gudiel, and dropped an 8-3 decision.
