After the first day of the South Coast Conference women’s tennis championships, Cerritos College has been able to advance four singles players to the quarterfinals, while one doubles team came out unscathed. The finals rounds will be held at Long Beach City College on Thursday and Friday.
In singles action, sophomore Annika You (John Marshall HS/Cal Poly Pomona) earned a first round bye before sweeping past Veronica Enriquez of Mt. San Antonio College, 6-0, 6-0. She is now scheduled to face sophomore teammate Steffanie Mendez (Bellflower HS) in the quarterfinals after she defeated Jackie Sanchez (Mt. San Antonio), 8-2 in the first round and then Elida Gudiel (Long Beach City), 6-2, 6-3. The winner of their match will advance to the semi-finals.
Also guaranteed a shot in the semi-finals, is either Sonia Gutierrez (Norwalk HS), who won the singles championship last year, and freshman Shamariah DeRojas (La Mirada HS). Gutierrez received a first round bye and then posted an 8-1 win over Valerie Perez of Mt. San Antonio. DeRojas, who had to upend Mary Sauer of Long Beach City, 8-0 in the first round, followed that by winning, 6-4, 7-6 (10-7) over El Camino’s Lateefa Brown.
Four other singles players were entered in the tournament, with all but three getting defeated in the first round.
In doubles action, Mendez and Sanchez have locked themselves in the quarterfinals after they advanced past Burlin Maloa and Justine McCauley of El Camino, who defaulted out of the tournament. That was followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Jessica Suegami and Jackie Sanchez of Mt. San Antonio. Awaiting them could be You and Gutierrez, who received a bye in the first round, while a win in the second round would pit the two against each other in the semis. The only other team to win their first round match was Gonzalez and DeRojas, who were then defeated in the second round.
