The Cerritos
College women’s tennis team
suffered their first defeat
of the early season, as
Orange Coast College
registered an 8-1 win on the
Falcon Courts Thursday
afternoon. The Falcons (1-1)
will now host Irvine Valley
College at 2:00 p.m. next
Tuesday.
The lone
Cerritos win was in the #1
doubles position early in
the match, as sophomore
Annika You (John
Marshall HS/Cal Poly Pomona)
teamed with sophomore
Sonia Gutierrez (Norwalk
HS) to defeat Brittany
Bass and Brittnie Furuvald,
8-3. You was in another
close match in singles
action, as she fell to Bass,
7-6, 6-7 (9-11).
The
Falcons were able to play
the Pirates close in the
opening set of the #2 and #3
singles matches, but both
Gutierrez and sophomore
Steffanie Mendez (Bellflower
HS) dropped the first
set, 5-7. Neither of them
could rebound in the second
set and were swept. Freshman
Tania Garcia (Huntington
Park HS) did post a 6-0
win the first set of her #6
singles match against Emily
Garcia, but was defeated,
4-6, 2-6 in the next two
sets.
In
doubles action, the teams of
Mendez and freshman
Shamariah DeRojas (La
Mirada HS), along with
freshmen
Joanna Gonzalez (Lynwood
HS) and
Cristina Sanchez (La
Mirada HS) were
defeated.
