The Cerritos
College women’s tennis team
ran their season record to
3-1 after registering a 6-3
non-conference win at
Glendale College on Thursday
afternoon. It was the first
of three straight road
matches for the Falcons, who
will conclude it by
competing in the San Diego
Mesa Tournament next
weekend. The team will first
travel to Saddleback College
for a 2:00 p.m.
non-conference match on
Tuesday.
Needing
to win the crucial singles
matches to put themselves in
position to win the match,
the Falcons did just that,
as they won four of the six.
The top two players,
sophomores
Annika You (John
Marshall HS/Cal Poly Pomona)
and
Sonia Gutierrez (Norwalk
HS) faced different
situations in their
respective matches, but each
came away with wins. You
recorded a quick 6-2, 6-2
win over Monique Palmera,
while Gutierrez was finally
able to break serve in the
first set to win, 6-4 before
being extended to a
tie-breaker in the second.
She came out on top with a
7-6 (7-5) win over Meldia
Hacopyan.
The #5
and #6 singles matches also
went to the Falcons, as
freshmen
Joanna Gonzalez (Lynwood
HS) and
Tania Garcia (Huntington
Park HS) won in straight
sets. Gonzalez won at #5,
6-0, 6-4, while Garcia
posted a 6-1, 6-2 win at #6.
In
doubles action, You and
Gutierrez remained
undefeated with an 8-4 win,
while Mendez teamed with
freshman
Cristina Sanchez (La
Mirada HS) for an 8-2
victory.
