For the
Cerritos College women’s
tennis team in their
non-conference match at
Saddleback College on
Tuesday afternoon, the
bottom half of their lineup
provided all of their
victories, while just one
from the top would have
secured a team win. However,
the Falcons came out on the
short end of a 5-4 decision,
which dropped their season
record to 3-2. They will now
host Victor Valley College
in another non-conference at
2:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Providing
wins for Cerritos against
the Gauchos were freshmen
Joanna Gonzalez (Lynwood
HS), who defeated Katie
Sexton, 6-4, 6-2, while
freshman
Cristina Sanchez (La
Mirada HS) and Summer
Wallin played the most
exciting match of the day,
with Sanchez coming out on
top, 6-2, 1-6, 12-10.
Additionally, freshman
Tania Garcia (Huntington
Park HS) finished off
Casey Wood by a score of
6-2, 6-2 in the #6 position.
The teams
top three players all had
their hands full, and
combined to win just seven
games. Sophomore
Annika You (John
Marshall HS/Cal Poly Pomona)
dropped a 3-6, 2-6 decision
in the team’s #1 position in
the closes of the three
losses.
In
doubles action, Sanchez and
sophomore Steffanie
Mendez (Bellflower HS)
posted an 8-5 win, while You
and sophomore
Sonia Gutierrez (Norwalk
HS) were defeated, 3-8.
Gonzalez and her doubles
partner, freshman
Shamariah DeRojas (La
Mirada HS), were also
defeated, as they dropped an
8-5 decision.
