The Cerritos
College women’s tennis team
was met with very little
resistance in their
non-conference home match
against Victor Valley
College on Thursday
afternoon. The Falcons (4-2)
defeated the Rams, 9-0, as
the team picked up two wins
by default against the
short-handed team. Cerritos
will now head south to
compete in the San Diego
Mesa Tournament over the
weekend.
It was a
quick 3-0 team lead for the
Falcons after they received
a default in the #1 doubles
match, while the other two
teams combined to lose just
two games. Freshmen
Joanna Gonzalez (Lynwood
HS) and
Shamariah DeRojas (La
Mirada HS) teamed for an
8-2 win, while freshman
Cristina Sanchez (La
Mirada HS) and sophomore
Steffanie Mendez
(Bellflower HS) posted an
8-0 win.
In
singles action, sophomore
Annika You (John
Marshall HS/Cal Poly Pomona)
posted a 6-1, 6-0 win in the
top sport over Rosyli
Reveron, with Mendez easily
defeating Amy Scott, 6-0,
6-0 in the #2 position. It
was the first time with
season that Mendez played at
#2. Sanchez (6-2, 6-0) and
freshman
Tania Garcia (Huntington
Park HS), who won 6-1,
6-2, also had strong
matches. The last match to
complete was a 6-3, 4-6
(10-8) victory for Gonzalez
in the #3 spot, while
freshman
Gaby Diaz received a
forfeit win at #6.
