With the start of the South Coast Conference season getting underway, the Cerritos College women’s tennis team got off to a great start, as they posted a 7-0 win over Mt. San Antonio College on Tuesday. With the win, the Falcons improved their record to 5-2 on the season, while they are 1-0 in SCC play. The team will now host El Camino College at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday.

    The Falcons weren’t tested very hard in most of the matches, which saw the team’s top two singles players, sophomores Annika You (John Marshall HS/Cal Poly Pomona) and Sonia Gutierrez (Norwalk HS) each win by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Sophomore Steffanie Mendez (Bellflower HS) fared equally as well, as she posted a 6-2, 6-0 win in her #3 position, while the duo of freshmen Cristina Sanchez (La Mirada HS) and Tania Garcia (Huntington Park HS) won, by 6-2, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-2 scores, respectively. Only freshman Joanna Gonzalez (Lynwood HS) was extended in her match, as she went 6-2, 7-6 (5) in her victory.

    In doubles competition, Cerritos lost a total of just five games in the three matches. You and Gutierrez, as well as Gonzalez and freshman Shamirah DeRojas (La Mirada HS) each won by an 8-2 count, with Mendez and Sanchez coming away with an 8-1 victory.
