The Cerritos College women’s tennis team concluded the first round of South Coast Conference play with a 6-1 home victory over Long Beach City College on Tuesday. The Falcons, who are also 7-2 on the year, start second round action on Thursday when they travel to Mt. San Antonio College for a 2:00 p.m. match.

    The Falcons earned the win over the Vikings by sweeping the five singles matches they won. In the #2 position, sophomore Sonia Gutierrez (Norwalk HS) and freshman Joanna Gonzalez (Lynwood HS) in the #4 spot, each posted 6-3, 6-2 wins, with sophomore Steffanie Mendez (Bellflower HS) coming away with a 6-2, 6-1 win at #3 over Elida Guidel. Freshman Tania Garcia (Huntington Park HS) posted a 6-1, 6-4 win over Karen Flores, while freshman Shamariah DeRojas (La Mirada HS) closed it out with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Eunice Choe. The only Falcon to lose was sophomore Annika You (John Marshall HS/Cal Poly Pomona), who was defeated by her former teammate at Cal Poly Pomona, Courtney Petero, 3-6, 5-7

    Petero and her doubles teammate, Kim Stern, made it a sweep over You, as they defeated her and doubles partner Gutierrez, 8-4. The other Cerritos teams of Gonzalez and DeRojas (8-3), along with Mendez and freshman Cristina Sanchez (La Mirada HS), who posted an 8-4 score, both won.
