Playing their third match in as many days, the Cerritos College women's tennis team still had enough in their tanks to shut out El Camino College for the second time this season, as they posted a 7-0 South Coast Conference victory at home on Thursday. The win kept the Falcons undefeated in conference play at 5-0, while they improved to 10-3 on the year. On Tuesday, they will travel to Long Beach City College for another 2:00 p.m. conference match.

 

    All six singles matches were two-set sweeps by Cerritos, with the duo of freshmen Joanna Gonzalez (Lynwood HS) and Shamariah DeRojas (La Mirada HS) each winning their matches by a 6-0, 6-1 score. At the top of the ladder, sophomore Annika You (John Marshall HS/Cal Poly Pomona) had little trouble with Lateefa Brown and posted a 6-1, 6-0 score, while sophomore Sonia Gutierrez (Norwalk HS) played to a 7-5, 6-0 win in the #2 position. Also picking up wins for Cerritos in singles play were sophomore Steffanie Mendez (Bellflower HS) with a 6-2, 6-0 score, and freshman Tania Garcia (Huntington Park HS), who came away with a 6-4, 6-3 win.

 

    The Falcons also swept through the doubles action, as You and Gutierrez ran their record together to 11-2 with an 8-1 win. Remaining undefeated as a doubles team was Mendez and freshman Cristina Sanchez (La Mirada HS), who are now 12-0 together after their 8-3 win. Gonzalez and DeRojas completed the clean sweep with their 8-2 victory.
