Facing a couple of strong individuals in a non-conference match, the Cerritos College women’s tennis team was able to come out on top in a 6-3 decision at Ventura College on Tuesday. With the win, the #8-ranked Falcons improved to 12-3 on the year, while they start the final round of South Coast Conference action on Thursday. Cerritos, looking to win their second straight conference title, will host Mt. San Antonio at 2:00 p.m.

    Sophomore Annika You (John Marshall HS/Cal Poly Pomona), coming off a tough loss to a player ranked higher than her, rebounded with a solid 6-2, 6-2 win over #4-ranked Ally Limon, with You ranked #8 in Southern California. Even though #14-ranked Sarah Gifford posted a 6-1, 6-4 win over sophomore Sonia Gutierrez (Norwalk HS) in the #2 match, the Falcons did pick up victories in three of the four remaining singles matches.

    Sophomore Steffanie Mendez (Bellflower HS) posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kryzta Tuazon, while freshmen Shamariah DeRojas (La Mirada HS) and Tania Garcia (Huntington Park HS) also posted straight-set wins. In doubles play, the #3-ranked team of Limon and Gifford posted am 8-5 win over the #4-ranked You and Gutierrez. However, freshman Joanna Gonzalez (Lynwood HS) and DeRojas registered an 8-4 win, while Mendez and freshman Cristina Sanchez (La Mirada HS) won, 8-2, which gave the Falcons the win.
