The Cerritos College women's tennis team clinched their second straight South Coast Conference championship on Thursday when they defeated Mt. San Antonio College, 7-0. The win by the Falcons keeps them undefeated in SCC play (7-0) and improves their overall record to 13-3. Cerritos will now close out their regular season next week when they host El Camino College on Tuesday and Long Beach City College on Thursday.

 

    The only real surprise in the win was that the doubles team of sophomore Steffanie Mendez (Bellflower HS) and freshman Cristina Sanchez (La Mirada HS) were defeated for the first time this season after winning their first 14 contests. They moved up to the #2 doubles spot in the match and dropped an 8-5 decision to Valerie Perez and Veronica Enriquez. The third team of freshmen Shamariah DeRojas (La Mirada HS) and Tania Garcia (Huntington Park HS), who were teaming for the first time this year, held on for a 9-8 (4) victory. It was the first doubles match of the season for Garcia.

 

    In singles action, the trio of sophomore Annika You (John Marshall HS/Cal Poly Pomona), Mendez and Garcia all won their matches by a 6-0, 6-1 score, with sophomore Sonia Gutierrez (Norwalk HS) posted a 6-0, 6-0 win. In the other singles matches, DeRojas came away with a 6-4, 6-4 win, with Sanchez winning, 6-4, 6-2.
