Cerritos College sophomore women's tennis player Annika You (John Marshall HS/Cal Poly Pomona) extended her season by reaching the quarterfinals of the Southern California Regional Tournament, which is taking place at Santa Barbara City College. You, who was seeded #6 in the tournament, was defeated by Orange Coast College's Brittany Bass, 5-7, 3-6 and was eliminated. But those that reached the third round automatically qualify for the state championships, which will take play next Thursday through Saturday at the El Dorado Tennis Center in Long Beach.
After opening the tournament with a bye, You posted wins over Rosie Reveron of Victor Valley College, 6-1, 6-1 and Neldia Hacopian of Glendale College, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-4, which was the qualifying match. She was then defeated by Bass.
You will be the lone representative for the Falcons at the state tournament, as two of the other singles entries were defeated while a third was injured and was unable to compete. In doubles play, both entries were defeated in their first action. In singles, sophomore Steffanie Mendez (Bellflower HS) was defeated, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6 by Jessica LaScola of San Diego Mesa College, while freshman Shamariah DeRojas (La Mirada HS) dropped a 4-6, 3-6 decision. Sophomore Sonia Gutierrez (Norwalk HS), who won the South Coast Conference singles championship her freshman year, was unable to compete due to an injury.
In doubles action, You and DeRojas were defeated, 2-6, 1-6, while Mendez and freshman Cristina Sanchez (La Mirada HS) received a first round bye, but then were eliminated by a 3-6, 2-6 score.
