After the first
day of the South Coast Conference Tournament, the
Cerritos College women's tennis team has seen three
of their singles and all four of their doubles teams
make it through to the next rounds. Held at Mt. san
Antonio College, the Falcons will see their singles
players start at 1:30, while doubles action gets
underway at 4:30 p.m. The finals will be held on
Saturday.
Top-seeded
Samantha Nadres (Troy
HS) received a bye in the first round than then
eliminated sophomore teammate
Cristina
Sanchez (La Mirada HS), 8-2.
Nadres will now face eighth-seeded Rebecca Su of Mt.
San Antonio, with the winner advancing to the
semi-finals later in the day. Freshman
Michelle Yi
(Warren HS), who's seeded #3, posted an 8-1
win over Valerie Perez of Mt. SAC in her only match
and will square off against Anita Kuttiudom of Mt.
SAC. The third Falcon to advance was freshman
Alana Johnson (Gahr HS), who
defeated Eunice Ma of El Camino, 8-2 and then upset
freshman
Christina
Nguyen (Gahr HS), 8-4, who was
seeded #7. Johnson will face #2-seed Kacy Turner of
El Camino.
In doubles action,
Nadres and Yi, who are seeded #1, received a bye and
will face Tatiana Steward and Ma in their first
match. Sanchez and her doubles partner, sophomore
Shamariah DeRojas (La Mirada HS),
posted an 8-4 win in their first meeting and with a
win over Arielle Monteilh and Kittudom on Thursday
will advance them against Nadres and Yi. Johnson and
freshman
Isamar Vega
(Pioneer HS) registered a 9-7 win in their
first match, while Nguyen and sophomore
Gabriela
Diaz received a forfeit win.
