For the upcoming
Southern California Regional singles and doubles
tournament, the Cerritos College women's tennis team
will be well represented. In addition to three
singles players advancing from the South Coast
Conference Tournament, all four Falcon doubles teams
have advanced. The top eight singles players and
doubles teams advance to the Southern California
Regionals, which will be held April 30 through May 1
at Cypress College.
Freshman singles
player
Samantha
Nadres (Troy HS) won all three
of her matches to advance to conference championship
match. However, the championship match, along with
the two semi-final doubles matches were not played.
It was decided by the state commissioner's office
that once you get your regional qualifiers, it's not
necessary to continue the conference tournament. For
the top-seeded Nadres, she was scheduled to face
#2-seeded Kacy Turner of El Camino College. The two
only faced each other once, and Nadres posted a 6-3,
6-2 win.
Joining Nadres
will be freshmen
Michelle Yi
(Warren HS) and
Alana
Johnson (Gahr HS), who were
both defeated by Turner along the way. Johnson
dropped a tough 6-2, 0-6, 10-7 match in the
quarterfinals, while Yi was beaten, 6-1, 3-6, 7-10
in the semi-finals.
In doubles action,
Nadres and Yi, who were seeded #1 didn't even have
to win a match, as they received a bye in the round
of 16 to automatically advance. In the one match
they played, they posted an 8-2 win and were
scheduled to face teammates
Shamariah
DeRojas (La Mirada HS) and
Cristina Sanchez (La Mirada HS)
in the semi-finals. The other two doubles teams,
Johnson and freshman
Isamar Vega
(Pioneer HS) and freshman
Christina
Nguyen (Gahr HS) and sophomore
Gabriela Diaz were defeated in quarterfinal matches,
but still advance.
