The Cerritos College
women's tennis team squared off against Cuesta College
in the first round of the Southern California Regional
Team Playoffs for the second straight year. For the
Falcons, the end result was the same as last year, as
the #2-seeded Cougars (13-0) posted a 5-1 win over
#7-seeded Cerritos, ending their team season at 12-4.
The match was resumed on Monday April 20th after being
postponed due to high winds on April 14th, which forced
the stoppage of the match.
Because Cuesta was able to post five wins in singles play,
they secured the win without having to move on and play
doubles. At the top of the ladder, freshman
Samantha Nadres (Troy
HS) held a 4-1 lead in the third set after
splitting the first two, 2-6, 6-4 against Chloe Redman.
But Nadres dropped the final five games, which turned
out to be the clinching win for the Cougars.
The lone winner for the Falcons on the say was freshman
Alana
Johnson (Gahr HS), who posted a
6-2, 6-2 win in the #2 position. Also extending her
opponent to a third set was sophomore
Shamariah
DeRojas (La Mirada HS), who
eventually fell, 6-2, 4-6, 2-6.
