Through the first
two days of the 109th Annual Ojai Valley Tournament,
just one Cerritos College women's tennis player
remains. On the day, both doubles teams and one of
two singles players were eliminated, leaving only
freshman singles player
Samantha
Nadres (Troy HS) in the
tournament. She will compete in the quarterfinals on
Saturday at 11:00 a.m. with a chance to advance to
the semi-finals.
The day started
with Nadres defeating Reedley College's Tammy
Taylor, 6-1, 6-0 and then went up against Brittany
Bass of Orange Coast College. Although the Falcons
faced the Pirates earlier in the year in a
non-conference team match, the two did not face each
other. Nadres, who dropped the first set, 6-7,
fought back in the next two sets to pull out a 7-5,
7-6 victory. She will now go up against Brittanie
Miller of Sierra College at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
It wouldn't be the
first time Nadres and Bass faced each other on the
day. Nadres and freshman doubles partner
Michelle Yi
(Warren HS) posted a 6-1, 7-5 win over
Erika Kagawa and Michelle Neville of Saddleback
College in their first match of the day. That sent
them against Bass and Melissa Boyer in a Round of 16
match, in which the Pirate duo registered a 7-6 (7),
6-3 win over Nadres and Yi. It was the first loss of
the season for the doubles team.
The team's other
doubles team, sophomores
Shamariah
DeRojas (La Mirada HS) and
Cristina Sanchez (La Mirada HS)
also lost their first match of the season, as Shoko
Hachiya and Arina Polonikova of Palomar College
defeated them, 6-2, 6-1. Freshman singles player
Alana Johnson (Gahr HS) was
also eliminated, as she lost 1-6, 0-6 to Tiffany
Shaik of Fullerton College in the Round of 16.
Earlier in the day, Johnson posted a 6-3, 6-2 win
over Alix Thomas of Santa Monica College.
