After dropping a
close match to Mt. San Antonio College on Tuesday,
the Cerritos College women's tennis team came right
back and easily defeated Long Beach City College,
9-0 in a South Coast Conference match. With the win,
the Falcons are now 7-3 overall and 3-1 in
conference action. They will now host El Camino
College in another SCC match at 2:00 p.m. next
Thursday.
Cerritos dominated
in both singles and doubles, as they lost just four
games in singles play and five in doubles action.
From the third position down to the sixth, the
Falcons shut out the Vikings, 6-0, 6-0, with wins
coming from freshmen
Christina
Nguyen (Gahr HS) and
Alana
Johnson (Gahr HS), while
sophomores
Shamariah
DeRojas (La Mirada HS) and
Cristina Sanchez (La Mirada HS)
also posted shutouts. At the top of the ladder,
freshman
Michelle Yi
(Warren HS) won her second straight match
in the top spot, by winning, 6-0, 6-1 with sophomore
Gabriela Diaz registering a 6-1, 6-1
win in the #2 position.
With freshman
Samantha Nadres (Troy HS)
still out, Yi and Johnson comprised the #1 doubles
team and posted a 6-1, 6-2 win, while Diaz and
Nguyen shut out their opponents, 6-0, 6-0. In the #3
spot, seldom-used freshmen
Isamar Vega
(Pioneer HS) and Sonya Jifkins
came away with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win.
