On the strength of
their 8-1 South Coast Conference win over El Camino
College on Thursday, the Cerritos College women's
tennis team will see the conference lead come down
to their match against Mt. San Antonio College next
Tuesday. The Falcons (10-3 overall, 6-1 SCC) and the
Mounties have split their first two meetings of the
season.
Despite losing the
top singles match against the Warriors after
freshman
Michelle Yi
(Warren HS) had to default due to an
injury, the Falcons were met with little resistance
the rest of the way. Freshman
Christina
Nguyen (Gahr HS) moved up to
the #2 position and posted a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win
over Tatiana Steward, while all of the other players
also did well after moving up one spot. Freshman
Alana Johnson (Gahr HS) won,
6-1, 6-2 in the #3 spot, while sophomore
Cristina
Sanchez (La Mirada HS) shut
out Mitzu Schwe, 6-0, 6-0 at #4. Freshman
Isamar Vega
(Pioneer HS) competed in a rare singles
match and registered a 6-3, 6-0 win.
In doubles play,
the lineups were switched around, but it didn't
matter, as the Falcons won both in straight sets.
The Warriors did not provide a #6 singles or #3
doubles entry. Freshman
Samantha
Nadres (Troy HS) teamed with
Sanchez for the first time and posted a 6-2, 6-0
win. As for Nguyen and sophomore
Gabriela
Diaz, they posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
