On the strength of
their 8-1 win over Mt. San Antonio College on
Tuesday afternoon, the Cerritos College women's
tennis team moved back into first place in the South
Coast Conference with just one match remaining. The
Falcons (10-3 overall, 6-1 SCC), who were tied with
the Mounties (7-7, 5-2), won two of the three
head-to-head matches. Cerritos closes out their
regular season on Thursday when they travel to Long
Beach City College for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
Leading the way in
the win was five straight-set singles victories,
while the doubles teams won two of three. Freshman
Samantha Nadres (Troy HS)
posted a 6-2, 6-1 win in her top spot, with freshman
Michelle Yi (Warren HS)
needing three sets to defeat Amanda Mullis, 6-1,
5-7, 10-6. After freshman
Christina
Nguyen (Gahr HS) broke serve
to win her first set, 7-5 in the #3 ladder position,
she easily won the second set, 6-2.
The bottom half of
the ladder proved to be the strength for the
Falcons, as freshman
Alana
Johnson (Gahr HS) won, 6-2,
6-1 to improve to 10-0 on the season. Sophomores
Shamariah DeRojas (La Mirada HS)
and
Cristina
Sanchez (La Mirada HS) also
won, with DeRojas posting a 6-4, 6-0 win and Sanchez
registering a 6-3, 6-4 victory.
In doubles action,
Nadres and Yi improved to 9-0 together with a 7-5,
6-0 win, while DeRojas and Sanchez are also 9-0 on
the season with their 6-3, 6-3 victory. The only
loss on the day was a 6-4, 4-6, 8-10 loss by Nguyen
and sophomore
Gabriela
Diaz in the #3 spot.
