The Cerritos
College women's tennis team will be represented in
the state championships at American River College
next weekend by freshman
Samantha
Nadres (Troy HS) in both
singles and doubles competition. The eight teams
that advance to the quarterfinals are automatic
qualifiers, and Nadres was able to accomplish both,
as she was joined by freshman
Michelle Yi
(Warren HS) in doubles play.
In singles play,
Nadres opened the day by defeated Katie O'Leary of
Bakersfield College, 6-2, 6-4, which advanced her to
the quarterfinals and her state berth. But she was
then defeated by Palomar College's Arina Polovnikova,
2-6, 6-3, 2-6 and was eliminated from the Southern
California Regional Tournament.
For Nadres and Yi
in doubles play, they posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over
Madeline Hovarter and Tiffani Shaik of Fullerton
College in the Round of 16 for their automatic
qualifier. That pitted them against Jacqueline
Rouqet and Marina Sales of College of the Desert in
the quarterfinals. But Nadres and Yi were eliminated
by an 0-6, 1-6 score.
The Falcons other
doubles team that looked to advance to the state
championships, sophomores
Shamariah
DeRojas (La Mirada HS) and
Cristina Sanchez (La Mirada HS)
were defeated in the Round of 16 by top-seeded Arina
Polovnikova and Shoko Hackiya of Palomar College,
2-6, 6-4, 1-6.
