At the Southern California Regional
Tournament last weekend, Cerritos College freshman
women's tennis player
Samantha
Nadres (Troy HS) was defeated
in the quarterfinals by Palomar College's Arina
Polovnikova in three sets. In the quarterfinals of
the state championships at American River College on
Friday, Nadres exacted her revenge with a 6-1, 6-3
win to advance to the semi-finals. Nadres will now
be facing Chloe Redman of Cuesta College, who
defeated her in three sets in the Southern
California Regional Team Playoffs three weeks ago.
Nadres opened the state tournament
with a strong 7-5, 6-0 win over Krystle Tran of
Sierra College, which set her up against Polovnikova.
In their meeting at the Southern California Regional
Tournament, Nadres lost the first set, 2-6, but then
came back for a 6-3 win in the second. Polovnikova
then eliminated Nadres with a 6-2 win in the third
set. But it was completely different in the state
quarterfinals, as Nadres jumped out early and
dominated Polovnikova.
Nadres, who also qualified for the
state tournament in doubles with freshman
Michelle Yi
(Warren HS), were eliminated in
the first round on Friday. They were defeated, 4-6,
3-6 by Vickee Gonzales and Yumiko Justin of Reedley
College, who are now in the semi-finals.
