Facing the
top-seeded player in Southern California, Cerritos
College freshman women's tennis player
Samantha
Nadres (Troy HS) was at a bit
of a disadvantage, as she was coming off a hard
fought semi-final match at the State Championship at
American River College on Saturday. Nadres seemed to
have overcome any fatigue, as she took a commanding
4-0 lead in the first set in the championship match
against Ashley Litchfield of Ventura College. But
Litchfield came back and posted a 7-6 (1) win in the
first set. Once again, Nadres took a lead (2-0) in
the second set, but Litchfield swept the final six
games to capture the title.
Nadres, who was
looking to be the first Falcon singles player to win
a state championship since Julie Hammon
in 1986, posted a 7-6 (3), 6-4 win over Chloe Redman
of Cuesta College to advance to the finals. The win
over Redman avenged a loss three weeks earlier in
the Southern California Team Playoffs. The only
other Cerritos player to win a state championship
was former head coach Terri Spence-Button, who won
back-to-back titles in 1982-83.
