For the Cerritos
College women's tennis team, their ability to win four
of the six singles matches in their non-conference win
over Glendale College on Tuesday was the key to their
5-4 victory. The Falcons, who improved to 9-8 overall,
realized that the difference in the win was a four-set
victory by freshman Stephany
Robles (El Rancho HS) in the #4
singles position, as she came away with a 6-0, 1-6, 11-9
victory over Brianna Hayes. Cerritos will now take the
next two weeks to prepare for the South Coast Conference
Tournament, which will take place at Long Beach City
College.
Despite their 4-2 team lead heading into doubles, Cerritos
had to old off the Vaqueros, who captured the first two
doubles matches and were primed to steal the win away.
But freshmen
Daisy Alvarez
(El Rancho HS) and
Tabitha Zavala
(El Rancho HS) came away with an 8-5 win over Sindi Concebida
and Mayra Alvarez in the #3 position.
Setting up the team win with singles victories were freshman
Nicole Delgado (Cerritos HS), a
6-1, 6-3 winner in the #2 spot, sophomore
Michelle Yi
(Warren HS), who posted a 6-2, 6-2 sweep, while
Zavala registered a 6-4, 6-0 win in the #5 position.
