Assuming
the head coaching duties for the women’s
program this season is Alvin Kim. For the
past six years, Kim has served as the
Cerritos College men’s tennis head coach and
will handle the dual role this year. Rosanna
Chatman, who had been the women’s head coach
since 2004, is recovering from some medical
issues. Last year, Chatman led the team to a
second place finish in the South Coast
Conference and a 9-8 overall record.
During Kim’s tenure with the Falcon men’s program over the
last six years, he started his career by
winning 34 straight South Coast Conference
matches and four straight conference titles.
That streak came to an end in 2009, as the
team finished in a second place tie with a
9-3 mark. They went 7-2 in 2010 and finished
in second place. Individually, freshman
Derek Siddiqui advanced to the semi-finals
of the state championships and enters this
season as one of the top-ranked singles
players in the state.
Kim has posted a 92-28 (.767) career record with the Falcon
men’s program, including a 49-5 (.907)
conference record and five championships.
Back in 2009, Kim saw his doubles team of
Doug Edwards and Jason Wall win the Ojai
Tournament championship, while they also
advanced to the semi-finals of the state
championship after they reached the
championships in their freshman year. It
also marked the first time a Cerritos men’s
tennis doubles team had ever reached the
state championship match.
In his first season, Kim led the Falcons to their first
conference championship in over 20 years and
are primed to win their fifth in his seventh
season. In each of his first five years, the
team advanced to the Southern California
Regional Team Playoffs, but were defeated in
the first round. The team missed out on the
playoffs in 2010.
Kim came to the program with 10 years of high school coaching
experience and has experienced success
throughout his coaching career. Kim has been
a member of the United States Professional
Tennis Association since 1998 and came to
Cerritos after a very successful high school
career. Kim spent eight years at Cerritos
High School and three seasons at La Mirada
High School. While at Cerritos High, Kim led
his teams to the Suburban League
championship each year and posted a 130-8
record. In his three seasons with La Mirada
High, he guided his teams to a 54-6 record.
Kim attended Sunny Hills High School, where he was an
All-League tennis player. He then attended
and played tennis at both Cypress College
and Vanguard University. He earned his
Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies from
Vanguard University. Kim is married and he
and his wife have two children, Aidan Ian
(4) and Tobin Samuel (2). |
