2008-2009 STATE CHAMPIONS

05.19.12 - Falcons win a pair of state championships
Had the
Cerritos College women's track and field team not been
beset by injuries to the core of their runners, they
would have been the odds on favorite to win the
California Community College Athletic Association
championship, which was held at Falcon Stadium on Friday
and Saturday. With the loss of freshman sprinter Ariana
Wright (Westminster HS), sophomore
sprinter Vernasha
Poole (Cheyenne, NV HS) - who were also
members of relay teams - sophomore hurdler
Lily Trinh
(Fountain Valley HS) and sophomore distance
runner
Tracy Bowling (Taft HS/Sacramento State
University), who could have netted the Falcons an
estimated 40 more team points, the team still compiled
50 points from their field events and came in a tie for
second place. Laney College, who benefitted the most
from the Cerritos injuries to Wright and Poole, won the
championship with 78 team points, while the Falcons tied
with Riverside College for second place.
But Cerritos did celebrate sophomore thrower
Priscilla Gardner (Mission Viejo HS), who won the discus with a state championship and school record toss that traveled 52.20 meters (171' 3"). It broke the state championship mark of 168' 3", which was set by Samantha Gutierrez of Riverside College in 2010, as well as her own school record of 50.36 meters from last year. Gardner, who accumulated 19 points on her own, finished in third place in the shot put at 13.11 meters (40' 1/2") and sixth in the javelin with a throw of 33.79 meters (110' 11"), but did not score any points in the hammer with her 10th place finish. As a freshman, Gardner came in second place at the state championships in the discus...[more]

2012 SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CHAMPIONS

05.12.12 - Cerritos overcomes injuries to win SoCal
Championship
Despite competing without freshman sprinting sensation Ariana
Wright (Westminster HS) and sophomore
distance runner
Tracy Bowling
(Taft HS/Sacramento State University), the
Cerritos College women's track and field team relied on
their dominant throwers to accumulate enough team points
to win the Southern California Championship on Saturday
at San Diego Mesa College. The Falcons finished with 75
team points to edge out second place Glendale College
(70 team points), with 59 of those points coming in the
four throwing events. The six qualifiers in the throws
events will be joined by freshman high jumper
Mariah Harris
(Leuzinger HS) at the State Championships, which
Cerritos will be hosting on Friday and Saturday.
Wright, who was injured at the Beach Invitational
several weeks ago, did run the anchor of the 400-meter
relay race, but the Falcons came in sixth place in 48.23
and missed out on qualifying for the state championships
by .07 seconds. Bowling was scheduled to run in the 5000
meters, but was unable to compete due to an injury.
In the throws events, Cerritos was led by sophomore
Priscilla Gardner (Mission Viejo HS), who qualified in four events including the discus where her distance of 48.30 meters earned her the Southern California Championship. Also qualifying in the discus were freshman Larrisha Fields (Lakewood HS), who came in second place at 42.97 meters, freshman
Tiffany Gray (El Dorado HS), the fifth place finisher at 39.77 meters and freshman Tuki Sauvao (Artesia HS), who qualified with her throw of 35.93 meters, good for seventh place. Gardner will also be competing in the state championships in the shot put, as her distance of 12.75 meters was good for third place, with Gray in fifth place at 12.44 meters. Sophomore Destini Poplar (Bellflower HS) did come in eighth place at 11.87 meters, but did not advance.
Gardner recorded a throw of 42.88 meters in the hammer
to come in fifth place to advance, with freshman
Carissa English (Marina HS) right behind in sixth place at 42.55 meters and will compete in the state championships. The fourth event for Gardner was the javelin, as she came in sixth place with a distance of 35.37 meters, while a pair of teammates finished ahead of her. Freshman
Angel Sifuentes (Central Union HS) finished a distance second place with a throw of 39.85 meters, while Sauvao was third at 37.56 meters. As for Harris, her high jump of 1.60 meters tied her personal best height and earned her fourth place...[more]

04.27.12 - Falcons come in second place at SCC
Championships
Holding
out several athletes who have automatically qualified
for the Southern California Preliminaries, which will
take place at San Diego Mesa College next Saturday, may
have cost the Cerritos College women's track and field
team the South Coast Conference Championship on Friday
at Compton College. With several athletes already
posting qualifying times, the coaching staff decided to
rest them and still came close to winning the conference
title. The Falcons finished with 162 team points, which
trailed only Mt. San Antonio College, who won the title
with 178 team points. Cerritos earned 119.5 of those
points in the field events...[more]
04.24.12 - Cerritos in second place after SCC Prelims
At the
conclusion of the South Coast Conference Preliminaries,
which were held at Compton College on Tuesday, the
Cerritos College women's track and field team is sitting
in second place with 51 team points and trail leader Mt.
San Antonio College, who has 84 team points. The
conference championships will take place at Compton
College on Friday. The Falcons collected all of their
points in the field events, with freshman
Angel Sifuentes
(Central Union HS) winning the championship in
the javelin, while freshman Tuki Sauvao
(Artesia HS) came in second place, which
accounted for 18 team points. Additional, Cerritos
athletes finished in second through sixth place in the
hammer throw...[more]
04.21.12 - Second school record falls to Wright
Just
two weeks ago, Cerritos College freshman track and field
athlete Ariana
Wright (Westminster HS) broke the school
record in the 100 meters, as she recorded a time of
11.35 at the Tiny Lister Invitational at Cal State Los
Angeles. On Saturday at the Beach Invitational, Wright
set a new record in the 200 meters, recording a time of
23.84 to break the old record of 23.91, which was set by
April Brown in 2003. In her first season with the
Falcons, Wright has now broke the record of Brown, who
was a three-time state champion in the 100 meters and
200 meters, combined. Her 100-meter time is currently
the fastest in the state, while she is tied for the
second fastest time in the state in the 200 meters, with
only Ashton Purvis of Laney College recording a faster
time with her 23.38. The team will now compete in the
South Coast Conference Preliminaries, which will be held
at Compton College on Tuesday.
In the 200 meters, Wright won her heat and was only
defeated by Shanequa Williams of Kent State University,
who ran a 23.74 and Christine Ohuruogo of Team England,
who was second overall in 23.76. Sophomore hurdler
Lily Trinh (Fountain Valley HS) finished in 38th place in the 400-meter IH with a time of 1:05.17, while her time of 15.77 in the 100-yard HH to come in 60th place overall. Both times were slower than her personal best times of the season. In the discus, sophomore
Priscilla Gardner (Mission Viejo HS) was also short of her personal best throw, but did record a distance of 46.04 meters to come in 13th place, as she was one of just five community college entries out of the 57 that competed...[more]
04.14.12 - Falcons win three events at Mt. SAC
Invitational
The
Cerritos College women's track and field team made their
mark on the 54th Annual Mt. San Antonio Invitational on
Saturday by winning three events, while also adding a
pair of second and third place finishes to their
showing. Freshman sprinter Ariana
Wright (Westminster HS), who set the
school record in the 100 meters the week before, won the
200 meters and did so by recording the fourth fastest
time in school history with her clocking of 24.19, which
moves her past Vernecia Smith's time of 24.20 that she
ran in 1981. Also winning events were sophomore thrower
Priscilla
Gardner (Mission Viejo HS) in the discus,
with a distance of 46.43 meters, while freshman
Tiffany Gray
(El Dorado HS) won the shot put with a throw that
travelled 12.28 meters, which edged Gardner, who
finished in second place at 12.22 meters. The Falcons

04.11.12 - Angel Sifuentes places seventh in heptathlon
On the
strength of her 4063 points, Cerritos College track and
field freshman
Angel Sifuentes
(Central Union HS) came in seventh place at the
Southern California Heptathlon Championships on
Wednesday at Falcon Stadium. The point total for Sifuentes
was also the fourth most in school history and advances
her to the State Championships, which will be hosted by
Cerritos on May 18-19. Also competing was freshman Tuki Sauvao
(Artesia HS), who came in 13th place with 3578
points...[more]
04.07.12 - Ariana Wright sets record in 100 meters
Back in
2002 and 2003, April Brown was a two-time state champion
in the 100 meters for the Cerritos College women's track
and field team and set the school record with a time of
11.41 in her freshman season. On Saturday it the Tiny
Lister Invitational at Cal State Los Angeles, Falcon
freshman Ariana
Wright (Westminster HS) broke Brown's
record time in the 100 meters with a clocking of 11.35,
which also earned her the Collegiate Athlete of the
Meet. As a team, Cerritos turned in some strong marks,
as they prepare for the final few meets of the season.
They will now compete in the Mt. San Antonio Relays on
Saturday...[more]
03.30.12 - Falcons make the most of site change
In a
last-minute decision, the Cerritos College women's track
and field team felt that the rainstorm that was about to
hit Northern California was going to force them to
withdraw from the American River Invitational in
Sacramento on Saturday. As a replacement, the Falcons
decided to enter the Titan Twilight Open at Cal State
Fullerton a day earlier in order to make sure the
athletes had a chance to compete. The end result was
that several athletes did well in various events. The
team will split their squad this weekend, with a portion
of the team travelling to Palo Alto to compete in the
Stanford Invitational, with the remainder to compete in
the Tiny Lister Invitational at Cal State Los
Angeles...[more]
03.23.12 - Cerritos excels at field events
Sophomore
thrower Priscilla Gardner (Mission Viejo HS) appears to be getting into her mid-season form, as she won both the shot put and discus, while placing second in the hammer at the Santa Barbara Relays on Friday. Gardner, who placed second in the discus and fifth in the hammer at last year's state championships, led a group of Cerritos College track and field athletes that dominated the field events on the day. The Falcons will now travel north this Saturday to compete in the American River Invitational...[more]
03.16.12 - Freshman continues to impress
Cerritos College freshman sprinter Ariana
Wright (Westminster HS) may very well set
a new school record in the 100 meters by the end of the
season. On Friday at the California Relays, Wright
defeated the field by posting a time of 11.69, which was
the second fastest time posted in school history and
bettered her time of 11.93 that she set the first week
of the season. The school record of 11.41 was set in
2002 by two-time state champion April Brown. On
the day, the Falcons won five other events, with four of
them coming in field events. The team will now travel to
Santa Barbara this Friday for the Easter Relays.
In addition to Wright's first place finish, the
400-meter relay team of freshman Khadijah Hall (Gahr HS), sophomore Vernasha Poole (Cheyenne, NV HS), sophomore

03.10.12 - Falcons set school record at four-year meet
Cerritos College sophomore distance runner
Tracy Bowling
(Taft HS/Sacramento State) is familiar with
running against four-year competition when she spent her
freshman season at Sacramento State University. On
Saturday in the Benny Brown Invitational at Cal State
Fullerton, Bowling set a new school record in the 5000
meters, despite coming in 15th place in the race and
being just one of three community college runners. Her
time of 17:47.33 eclipsed the old standard of 18:18.86,
which was set in 2006 by Meryl Follosco. As a
team, the Falcons fared very well and will now host the
California Relays on Wednesday and Thursday...[more]
03.03.12 - Team hosts big invitational
The Cerritos College women's track and field program
hosted the Beach Invitational on Saturday, which
included competitors from many four-year universities,
along with other community Colleges. The Falcons had
several strong performances, including sophomore
Tracy Bowling
(Taft HS/Sacramento State University), who posted
the fifth fastest time in school history in the 1500
meters, while dominating the discus with three of the
top eight finishers. This weekend, the team will travel
to Cal State Fullerton to compete in the Benny Brown
Invitational...[more]

athletes who won, while the Falcons also won one of the
relay events. On Friday, Cerritos will compete at the

River College. The Falcons finished with 50 team points
and trailed co-champions - and conference rivals - Mt.
San Antonio College and El Camino College, who had 81
team points, as well as host American River with 69 team
points. Had Cerritos been able to match some of their
best times and distances of the year at the state
