The Cerritos College track
and field program hosted their annual invitational in
which upwards of 25 colleges competed in 15 running and
eight field events. The Falcons excelled in their
specialty, relay races, as they won three of them and
came in second place in another. The 800-meter relay
team won in a time of 1:42.66, while a second team came
in fourth place at 1:49.47. As for the 1600-meter relay
team, their first place time of 3:58.64 earned them an
automatic bid into the Southern California
Preliminaries, while the 800-meter sprint relay team
finished first overall in 1:50.05, with the 400-meter
relay quartet coming in a close second place at 48.83.
The big news in the
invitational was in the pole vault, as sophomore
Jennifer Espinosa (Santa Fe HS) set a new
school record with a height of 11 0, which placed her
in a tie for third place. She broke her old record of
10 8, which she set last season and automatically
qualifies for the Southern California Preliminaries.
In the distance races,
sophomore Meryl Follosco (Kennedy HS)
recorded the second fastest time in the 1500 meters at
4:45.68, which put her third in the race and her time
also automatically qualifies her for the Southern
California Preliminaries, while freshman
Yasmin Webb
(Buena Park HS) will also advance after her
second place finish in the 100-meter low hurdles in a
time of 14.89. Follosco also posted the second fastest
5000 meters in school history at 18:51.60, which put her
in fourth place in the race. Sophomore
Tatyanna Ricks
(Lakewood HS) tied for second place in the high
jump at 5 2, which qualifies her for the prelims, with
sophomore
Alison Sarell (Gahr HS) coming in second
place in the triple jump at 35 5½.
Sophomore
Lei
Richardson (Las Vegas, NV HS/Lassen College),
who comprises one-fourth of the teams 400-meter relay
team, posted the fourth best long jump in school history
with her distance of 18 1, which was good for second
place in the invitational.
The team will now compete in
the Long Beach Relays on Saturday starting at 10:00 a.m.
on the campus of Cal State Long Beach.
