03.24.06 - FALCON TRIO SETS NEW STATE RECORD WITH TOP THREE FINISHERS

            Three members of the Cerritos College women’s track and field team accomplished something that has never been done in the history of the state in the heptathlon on Tuesday and Wednesday at Moorpark College in the Southern California Heptathlon Championships. The Falcons, led by a trio of sophomores, took the top three spots, with two of the entrants breaking the old school record for points.

            Sophomore Jacqueline Taylor (Long Beach Poly HS), arguably the best all-around athlete to ever compete for the Falcons, broke her old school record with 4413 points to win the Southern California Championship. Last year, she placed second in the Southern California and State Championships. She was followed by sophomore Tatyanna Ricks (Lakewood HS), who amassed 4316 points, which was more than Taylor’s old standard of 4283. Ricks placed ninth in the state championships last year after coming in third place in the Southern California Championships as a freshman. Taking third place was sophomore Katie Black (Downey HS), who competed in the state championships last year in the high jump, with 4022 points.

            All three automatically qualify for the state championships, which will be held at Bakersfield College on May 19-20. More importantly, the trio has already earned 24 team points towards the Southern California team championships, while will be held at Mt. San Antonio College on May 13.

            Taylor won the long jump, while she also placed second in three other events, as 33 competitors took part in the heptathlon. In fact, in the long jump, the three Falcons took the top three spots, with Ricks coming in second and Black taking third place. The only other event won by a Cerritos athlete was the high jump, which was won by Ricks.
