The quartet of freshman
Khandie Brooks (Dorsey
HS), sophomore
Brandi Holmes (Redondo
Union HS), sophomore
Amanda Rosencrantz (Kennedy
HS) and freshman Marie
Leroux (Fountain Valley
HS) beat all opponents and
turned in a time of 3:57.39 to win
the 1600-meter relay race at the
prestigious Mt. San Antonio
Invitational on Saturday. In
addition to their championship, the
team also had two second place
finishers and three third places.
Members of that
race also competed in other events,
as Brooks placed eighth in the 100
meters (12.79) and 10th in the 200
meters (26.45), while Holmes turned
in a fourth place finish in the
400-meter hurdles with a time of
1:07.32. As for Leroux, she came in
second place in the 400 meters with
a time of 1:00.01, while her time of
26.43 was good for ninth place in
the 200 meters. Freshman
Angela Negrete (Western
HS) had the team's other second
place finish, as she ran a strong
800 meters and turned in a time of
2:20.05, with freshman
Christina Griffis (Kennedy
HS) coming in eighth in both
the 100-meter low hurdles (16.81)
and 400-meter hurdles (1:10.99).
In the field
events, freshman
Maria Rodriguez (Bell
HS) had an outstanding day, as
she came in third place in the shot
put at 39' 4 1/2", fourth place in
the discus at 115' 6", while her
toss of 112" in the hammer put her
in 12th place. As for freshman
Jarvina McClain (El
Rancho HS), she also competed
in the discus (114' 11", 5th place)
and the shot put (32' 0", 10th
place), while sophomore
Portia Ford (Long
Beach Poly HS) finished third
in the triple jump at 34' 4 1/2" and
eighth in the long jump at 16' 3".
Sophomore
Le'Sauna Johnson (Long
Beach Poly HS) was right behind
Ford in the triple jump and placed
fourth at 33' 3 1/2".
The team will now
head to Cal State Los Angeles on
Thursday to compete in the Los
Angeles Open.
