At the South Coast
Conference Preliminaries,
which where held at Cerritos
College on Saturday, the
Falcon women's track and
field team had 10 runners
finish in the top 12 to
advance to the finals, while
four in field events have
also advanced. The top 12
individuals in all of the
events that were contested
move on to the South Coast
Conference Championships,
which will also be held at
Cerritos on Friday, starting
at 12:00 p.m. Several of the
events were finals and the
Falcons picked up two team
points from freshman
Angela Negrete
(Western HS), who
placed seventh in the
javelin.
In the
running events, the Falcons
were loaded in the 800
meters, as four finished in
the top 12 to move on to the
finals. Sophomore
Amanda Rosencrantz
(Kennedy HS) posted
her fastest time of the year
with a 2:17.81, which put
her in second place, while
Negrete was right behind at
2:20.60, good for third
place. Also running for
Cerritos in the race were
sophomore
Maria Vargas (Downey
HS), whose time of
2:28.48 put her in four
place, while freshman
Kayla Otey (Kennedy
HS) posted a time of
2:33.58, good for seventh
place. As for the 200
meters, sophomore
Tavonia Clay (Moskegan,
MI HS), led a trio of
Falcon runners with a
seventh place finish at
26.15. She will be joined in
the finals by freshmen
Khandie Brooks
(Dorsey HS), who
placed eighth at 26.19, and
Marie Leroux (Fountain
Valley HS), who came in
ninth place at 26.22. Leroux
and Brooks also advanced in
the 400 meters, as Leroux
came in third place (59.77),
while Brooks (1:03.75) came
in 10th. Freshman
Rayneisha Pitts
(Long Beach Poly HS)
came in eighth place in the
100 meters at 13.10.
As for
the field events, the trio
of Brooks, along with
sophomores
Portia Ford (Long
Beach Poly HS) and
Le'Sauna Johnson
(Long Beach Poly HS)
advanced in the long jump.
Brooks (16' 4 1/4") came in
fifth place, with Ford (16'
4") and Johnson (15' 2 1/2")
placing sixth and eighth,
respectively.
