finished
second at the
South Coast
Conference
Championships
held at Falcon
Stadium Friday

The Cerritos College
women's track and field
team won four different
events at the South
Coast Conference
Championships on Friday
at Falcon Stadium and
earned enough points to
come in second place.
The team finished the
meet with 147 team
points and trailed only
eventual champion Mt.
San Antonio College, who
had 297 points. The top six from all of
the events that were
held now advance to the
Southern California
Prelims, which will take
place on Saturday,
starting at 9:00 a.m. at UC San Diego.
Freshman thrower
Maria Rodriguez
(Bell HS) was a
two-time winner, as she
posted the third-best
hammer throw in school
history at 139' 0" to
win the event. She was
joined by freshman
Jarvina McClain
(El Rancho HS),
who placed fourth at
105' 8" and also went on
to win the discus with a
toss of 112' 1".
Rodriguez, who also won
the shot put with a
distance of 38' 7 3/4",
finished second in the
discus at 110' 4".
McClain also competed in
the shot put and came in
fourth place with a
distance of 29' 11 1/2".
Also winning an
event was the 1600-meter
relay team of freshman
Khandie Brooks
(Dorsey HS),
sophomore
Amanda Rosencrantz
(Kennedy HS),
freshman
Angela Negrete
(Western HS)
and freshman
Marie Leroux
(Fountain Valley HS),
who finished in a time
of 3:56.45 and won by
nine seconds. In the
400-meter relay race,
the quartet of sophomore
Portia Ford
(Long Beach Poly HS),
Leroux, Brooks and
Rosencrantz came in
fourth place with a time
of 49.61. Rosencrantz
has also already posted
a qualifying time in the
400 meters for the
prelims.
In other running
events, sophomore
Tavonia Clay
(Moskegan, WI HS)
advanced in the 100
meters (12.59) with a
fifth place finish,
while Brooks finished
sixth in the 200 meters
(26.23) and Leroux came
in second place in the
400 meters with a time
of 59.30. Four runners
advance to the next
round in the 800 meters,
led by Negrete's second
place finish in 2:21.85,
with Rosencrantz
(2:28.62; 3rd place)
being joined by freshman
Kayla Otey
(Kennedy HS) in
fourth place at 2:29.70
and sophomore
Maria Vargas
(Downey HS)
coming in fifth place at
2:29.88. Vargas also
advanced in the 1500
meters with a sixth
place time of 5:08.78,
while freshman
Christina Griffis
(Kennedy HS)
made it in the 100-meter
low hurdles (16.18) in
fourth place and in the
400-meter hurdles with a
second place time of
1:09.02. She is joined
by sophomore
Brandi Holmes
(Redondo Union HS)
in the 400 meter hurdles
after her third place
time of 1:09.34.
Rounding out the
field event qualifiers
are Brooks (16' 3 1/2")
and Ford (15' 9 1/2") in
the long jump, which
placed them fourth and
sixth, respectively.
Ford also advanced in
the triple jump with a
third place distance of
35' 5 1/2" and will be
joined by sophomore
Le'Sauna Johnson
(Long Beach
Poly HS), who
placed fourth at 33' 6
3/4".
