This Week's Sports Schedule

02.16.07 - FALCONS DEFEAT TWO OF THREE CONFERENCE OPPONENTS

The Cerritos College women's track team opened their South Coast Conference season by winning two out of three in their first meet of the season on Friday. The Falcons, the defending state champions, posted wins over Long Beach City (135-96) and El Camino College (135-67), while they dropped a 183-135 score to Mt. San Antonio College. The team will now compete in the Cerritos Invitational on March 23-24, which will serve as the inaugural meet on the school's new track.

The team had two individual champions at the meet, while seven others placed second. Leading the way was sophomore Portia Ford (Long Beach Poly HS), who captured the triple jump with a leap of 34' 10", while her jump of 15' 4 1/2" in the long jump was good enough for second place. As for freshman thrower Maria Rodriguez (Bell HS), she won the shot put at 40' 11", while sophomore Le'Sauna Johnson (Long Beach Poly HS) was a second place finisher in the triple jump at 33' 9 1/2".

The Falcons, who had their team depleted by recruitment, still had several second place finishers in the running events, as freshman Khandie Brooks (Dorsey HS) placed second in the 100 meters (12.42) and fourth in the 200 meters at 27.05. As for freshman Marie Leroux (Fountain Valley HS), her time of 1:00.90 was good for second place in the 400 meters, while freshman Angelica Negrete (Western HS), she placed second in the 800 meters.
