Competing for the first time on their brand new track, the Cerritos College women's track and field had several outstanding performances at the Cerritos Invitational, which took place on Friday and Saturday. The team will now enter the USC Invitational on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. on the Southern California campus.

Although nobody won any of the events, the Falcons did have three second place finishes, to go along with a third place and two four place results. Sophomore sprinter Tavonia Clay (Moskegan, MI HS) came in second place in the 100 meters with a time of 12.70, while her clocking of 26.10 in the 200 meters was good for fourth place. In addition to the 1600-meter relay team that placed second overall in a time of 4:03.97, the 400-meter relay team came in fourth place in 50.71.

Field events have been one of the strong suits for the women's team over the past few years, and this season is no different. Freshman Maria Rodriguez (Bell HS) recorded a distance of 40' 9" to place second in the shot put, while sophomore thrower NaShawnda Grant (Santa Fe HS) finished third in the javelin (110' 10") and seventh in the hammer throw with a distance of 128' 8". The Falcons also had two athletes finish in the top six in the triple jump, as sophomore Portia Ford (Long Beach Poly HS) and Le'Saunda Johnson (Long Beach Poly HS) performed well.
