Facing some very tough
competition at the Bakersfield Relays over the
weekend, the Cerritos College women's track and
field team won three different events and finished
in the top three 14 different times. The team will
now root on their heptathletes, as Cerritos hosts
the Southern California Heptathlon Championships on
Tuesday and Wednesday starting at 9:30 p.m.
Winning their events were sophomore
Tavonia Clay
(Moskegan, WI HS) in the 100 meters with a
time of 12.48, while freshman teammates
Khandie
Brooks (Dorsey HS) and
Rayneisha
Pitts (Long Beach Poly HS)
finished third and fifth, respectively. Clay also
placed second in the 200 meters with a time of
26.23, while Brooks was right behind in third place
at 26.34. Capturing the 400-meter intermediate
hurdles was freshman
Christina
Griffis (Kennedy HS) with a
clocking of 1:13.09, while she also placed third in
the 100-meter low hurdles in a time of 17.30.
Freshman thrower
Maria
Rodriguez (Bell HS) won the
shot put with a throw of 37' 6" and also placed
fourth in the hammer with a toss of 114' 7".
Sophomore Le'Sauna Johnson
(Long Beach Poly HS) placed in the
top three in three different events on the day.
After tying for second place in the high jump at 4'
3", she placed third in the long jump (15' 10") and
triple jump (34' 3"). Also faring well in the field
events was freshman
Jarvina
McClain (El Rancho HS), who
came in second place in the discus at 112' 5", while
she also came in eighth place in the shot put.
Freshman
Angela
Negrete (Western HS) ran well,
as she came in third place in the 800 meters with a
time of 2:24.98, while freshman teammate
Marie
Leroux (Fountain Valley HS)
placed fourth in the 400 meters (1:01.51) and ninth
in the 200 meters (27.33). Both the 400-meter and
1600-meter relay teams came in second place in the
running events.
