Freshman throwers
Maria Rodriguez (Bell HS)
and
Jarvina McClain (El Rancho HS)
placed first and second in the shot put at the
first day of events at the Cerritos Relays,
which are being held at Cerritos College.
Rodriguez turned in a throw of 41' 1", while
McClain's second place toss went for 33' 9". The
second day of events starts with high school
events getting underway at 11:00 a.m. with the
first community college event starting at 1:00
p.m. The highlight of the day will be the track
and field dedication ceremony, which will take
place at 4:30 p.m.
Also in field events, freshman
Angela Negrete (Western HS)
placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 80'
10, with McClain (73' 8") and Rodriguez (60' 7")
right behind in fifth and sixth places,
respectively. Freshman sprinter
Khandie Brooks (Dorsey HS)
advanced to the finals on Saturday after
she came in eighth place in the 100 meters with
a time of 13.03, while her time of 26.43 was
good for ninth place in the 200 meters. The top
nine times advance to the finals. Freshman
Christina Griffis (Kennedy HS)
posted a fifth place showing in the 100-meter
hurdles in a time of 16.84.
