Sophomore
Amanda Rosencranz (Kennedy
HS) turned in a time of 57.50 in the
400 meters for the Cerritos College women's
track and field team to win the event on the
second day of the California Relays, which
was held at Cerritos College. She was joined
by the 1600-meter relay team, which also won
their event in a time of 4:05.92. The
Falcons will now travel north and split the
squad to compete in the Fresno Invitational
and the Stanford Invitational on Saturday.
The two wins by the
Falcons were against some of the better
community college and open competitors, as
the meet drew some of the best athletes in
track and field. In other running events,
freshman
Khandie Brooks (Dorsey HS)
came in eighth place in the finals of the
200 meters in a time of 27.32, while
freshman Marie Leroux (Fountain
Valley HS) also ran well in the 400,
and finished in sixth place with a time of
1:01.68.
As for freshman
Angela Negrete (Western HS),
her time of 2:21.67 put her in fifth place
in the 800 meters, while sophomore
Maria Vargas (Downey HS)
placed fifth in the 5000 meters (20:26.87)
and 10th in the 1500 meters (5:11.31).
Freshman
Christina Griffis (Kennedy
HS) competed in both hurdle races, and
came in fifth in the 100-meter low hurdles
in a time of 16.77, while her clocking of
1:1.14 in the 400-meter hurdles placed her
seventh. Sophomore teammate
Brandi Holmes (Redondo
Union HS) finished in fifth place in
the 400-meter hurdles with a time of
1:12.47.
In the jumping events,
sophomore
Le'Sauna Johnson (Long
Beach Poly HS) came in fourth place in
both the long jump (16' 2") and triple jump
(34' 7"), while sophomore
Portia Ford (Long Beach
Poly HS) finished in fifth in the long
jump (15' 11") and third in the triple jump
at 35' 0". The two were joined by Brooks in
the long jump, and she finished in sixth
place with a leap of 15' 9". Freshman
Maria Rodriguez (Bell HS),
who won the shot put on the first day,
placed third in the discus (88' 9") and
fifth in the hammer throw at 119' 0". She
was bested in the discus by freshman
teammate
Jarvina McClain (El Rancho
HS), who turned in a second place throw
of 112' 2" in the discus.
