The trio of sophomore
Portia Ford (Long Beach
Poly HS), freshman
Khandi Brooks (Dorsey
HS) and sophomore
Le'Sauna Johnson (Long
Beach Poly HS) took the top three
spots in the long jump at the Fresno
Invitational on Saturday to help the
Cerritos College women's track and field
team come in second place overall. The
Falcons compiled 115 team points and
trailed only Sacramento City College,
who had 160 team points and won the
invitational. Cerritos will now compete
in the prestigious Mt. San Antonio
Invitational on Saturday.
Ford won the event with a jump of
16' 6", while Brooks was right behind
with a best leap of 16' 2". Not far
behind was Johnson, whose best jump of
16' 1 3/4" earned her third place. The
duo of Johnson (35' 3") and Ford (34'
11") took the top two spots in the
triple jump, while freshman thrower
Maria Rodriguez (Bell
HS) placed fifth in the shot put
and sixth in the discus.
In
the running events, Brooks took second
place in the 200 meters with a time of
26.15, while her time of 12.68 placed
her fourth in the 100 meters. Joining
Brooks in both races was freshman
Marie Leroux (Fountain
Valley HS), who came in fifth in
the 100 (12.72) and sixth in the 200
(27.45). Sophomore
Amanda Rosencrantz (Kennedy
HS) turned in a second place finish
in the 800 meters with a time of
2:21.71, with freshman teammate
Angela Negrete (Western
HS) in a close third place at
2:23.91. Sophomore
Maria Vargas (Downey HS)
ran well, coming in third in the 5000
meters (21:12.0) and fourth in the 800
meters at 2:23.91.
