The Cerritos College
women's track and
field team advanced
athletes in five
individual events
and one relay team
to the state
championships, which
will be held at San
Mateo College this
weekend. The
performance turned
in by the Falcons at
the Southern
California
Championships this
past weekend at UC
San Diego earned
them an eighth place
team finish with
their 36 points.
Those that will
represent Cerritos
include sophomore
Tavonia Clay
(Moskegan, MI HS)
in the 100 meters,
sophomore
Amanda Rosencrantz
(La Mirada HS)
in the 400 meters,
freshman
Angela Negrete
(Western HS)
in the 800 meters,
freshman
Maria Rodriguez
(Bell HS)
in the shot put and
freshman
Jarvina McClain
(El Rancho HS)
in the discus. The
team will also be
represented in the
1600-meter relay
race and will be
comprised of
freshman
Khandie Brooks
(Dorsey HS),
Rosencrantz, sophomore
Brandi Holmes
(Redondo Union
HS) and
freshman
Marie Leroux
(Fountain Valley
HS).
With Clay, she was a
fifth place finisher
in the 100 meters at
12.50, but with the
race being a
nine-lane race, the
faster time between
Northern and
Southern California
in the finals gets
the ninth spot at
the state
championships. It
was the same
situation for
Negrete in the 800
meters, as she
placed fifth with a
time of 2:17.99 and
earned the final
bid. Rosencrantz,
who came in fourth
place at the state
championships last
year in the 400
meters, posted a
time of 56.73 this
past weekend and it
earned her a third
place finish.
Rodriguez bested her
personal best throw
in the shot put with
a distance of 41'
3", which earned her
a second place
finish, while
McClain came in
fourth place in the
discus with a toss
of 124' 5".
Rodriguez was also
entered in the
discus, but did not
register a distance.
In the relay race,
the Falcons turned
in a time of 3:54.21
and came in second
place, as they were
beat by Antelope
Valley College by
almost four seconds.
Those that competed
for the Falcons but
did not qualify for
the state
championships
included Clay in the
200 meters (26.73,
9th place), Leroux
in the 400 meters
(59.87, 8th place),
sophomore
Maria Vargas
(Downey HS)
in the 1500 meters
(5:14.22, 12th
place), Brooks in
the long jump (15'
4", 11th place),
sophomore
Le'Sauna Johnson
(Long Beach Poly
HS) in the
triple jump (33' 11
3/4", 11th place),
Vargas in the hammer
(104' 11", 12th
place) and the
400-meter relay team
of Clay, Leroux,
Brooks and
Rosencrantz, who did
not finish the race.
