Last season, the
Cerritos College
women's track
and field team
concluded a
remarkable
season by
winning their
second state
championship in
school history.
The team was
represented by
five individuals
and one relay
this this past
weekend at San
Mateo College in
the state
championships,
and placed 14th
out of 42
schools with 20
team points.
American River
College won the
team
championship
with 90.5 team
points, and
edged Laney
College, who had
83 points. South
Coast Conference
opponent Mt. San
Antonio College
came in third
place with 61
points.
Freshman
thrower
Maria Rodriguez
(Bell HS)
finished off a
great first
season, as she
came in third
place in the
shot put with a
throw of 42' 3",
which was her
best throw of
the season and
fourth best in
school history.
She was joined
in the field
events by
freshman
Jarvina McClain
(El Rancho
HS), whose
throw of 121'
1/2" in the
discus earned
her an eighth
place finish.
In the
running events,
sophomore
Amanda
Rosencrantz
(Kennedy HS),
a member of the
state
championship
team last year,
placed fourth in
the 400 meters
with a time of
57.32. She also
came in fourth
place in last
year's state
championships in
the 400 meters.
Another member
of last year's
team, sprinter
Tavonia Clay
(Moskegan,
MI HS),
came in ninth
place in the 100
meters with a
time of 12.60,
while freshman
Angela Negrete
(Western HS)
posted a time of
2:21.04 in the
800 meters to
come in sixth
place.
The
400-meter relay
team of freshman
Khandie Brooks
(Dorsey HS),
Rosencrantz,
sophomore
Brandi Holmes
(Redondo
Union HS)
and freshman
Marie Leroux
(Fountain
Valley HS)
came in fourth
place with a
time of 3:56.97,
which was more
than two seconds
off their best
time of the
season.
