On the
strength of their field events depth,
the Cerritos College women's track and
field team swept through all six teams
in their South Coast Conference meet at
Long Beach City College on Friday. The
Falcons outdistanced all of their
competition with 273 team points, with
El Camino College in a distant second
place with 134 points. They were
followed by Long Beach City (45),
Pasadena City College (18), Los Angeles
Trade-Tech College (12), Los Angeles
Southwest College (10) and Los Angeles
City College (2). Cerritos will now
enter the prestigious Mt. San Antonio
Relays, which will start at 10:00 a.m.
on Saturday.
Of the
team's 273 team points, an amazing 174
of them came from the field events. Even
the newest addition to the team,
freshman
Rachel Butler (Calvary
Chapel HS), who was a member of the
Falcon basketball team, excelled from
the outset. In her first meet, she
turned in the fifth-best javelin throw
in school history with a distance of
113' 10", which beat out the next three
finishers, which were all Falcons. Along
with her first place finish in the
javelin, Butler also finished third in
the discus (113' 10") and seventh in
both the shot put and hammer.
In the
hammer, all eight competitors were from
Cerritos, with sophomore
Maria Rodriguez (Bell
HS) winning the event with a
distance of 135' 1 3/4", with freshmen
Whitney Ashley (J.W.
North HS) finishing second at 132'
9 1/2". Sophomore
Jarvina
McClain (El Rancho HS)
came in third place at 130' 3 3/4".
Ashley also won the discus (150' 1") and
placed third in the shot put (38' 10
1/2") and javelin (95' 9"), while
Rodriguez finished second in the shot
put (39' 2").
In the
running events, sophomore
Patrice
Fernandes (Loara
HS/Santa Ana College) won the 100
meters in a time of 12.50 and the
400-meter hurdles with a clocking of
1:06.01, with teammates
Erin
Straughter (Valencia
HS) and
Apryll
White (Kennedy HS)
right behind her. Sophomore
Khandie
Brooks (Dorsey HS)
had a solid day, winning with 400 meters
(1:00.44), while coming in second place
in the long jump (15' 4 1/2") and third
in the 200 meters at 26.63. Freshmen
Shannon Simpson (Fountain
Valley HS) and
Lucy
Beuster (Kennedy
HS) won the 1500 meters (5:01.43)
and 3000 meters (10:57.27),
respectively.
Finishing off the field events, freshman
Karen
Guravska (El
Dorado HS) won the high jump (5'
0"), while freshman
Lisa David (Norwalk HS)
posted an 8' 6" to win the pole vault.
In the triple jump, the only two
competitors were freshmen
Jessica Barfield (Lynwood
HS) and
Brandi McCall (Norwalk
HS), while Barfield came in third
place in the long jump.
