The Cerritos College women's track and field team pulled
away from Mt. San Antonio College on Friday to win the
South Coast Conference Championship. The Falcons, who
had eight individual winners and won both relay races,
finished with 296 team points, while the Mounties ended
up with 215 team points.
Below is a list of
Falcons who have qualified for the Southern California
Preliminaries after the conference championships were
completed. The top six from each event have advanced to
the prelims, which will be held at Bakersfield College
next Saturday, In addition, there will be a selection of
automatic qualifiers that will be decided at a seeding
meeting on Sunday at College of the Canyons.
Although there were no Falcons who won multiple events, there
are quite a few who have advanced in more than one
event. The team dominated the throws competition, as
they won two of the events, while they have currently
qualified for 16 spots. In addition, the Falcons won
another field event and have qualified for eight more
spots.
Cerritos won both of the hurdle events, as
Erin
Straughter (Valencia HS) captured the
100-meter IH, with freshman
Apryll White
(Kennedy HS) capturing the 400-meter IH. As for
the distance races, the duo of freshmen
Lucy Beuster
(Kennedy HS) and
Shannon
Simpson (Fountain Valley HS) took first
and second place in the 5,000 and 10,000 meter races.
Sophomore
Khandie Brooks (Dorsey HS) won the 400
meters, while the team won both the 400-meter and
1600-meter relay races.
