03.10.08 - SCHOOL RECORD FALLS AT BEN BROWN INVITE

    Sophomore Yasmin Webb (Buena Park HS) broke a 27-year old record in the 400-meter hurdles on Saturday, when she posted a time of 61.15 at the Ben Brown Invitational, which was held at Mt. San Antonio College. Webb, who posted the second fastest time in the meet, broke the old record of 61.40, set in 1981 by Sonya Briscoe. In addition to the record set by Webb, freshman Sade Williams (Long Beach Poly HS) registered the second-fastest time in the state this year in the 400 meters, with her time of 56.25. The time won the invitational and is also the fourth fastest in school history. Freshman thrower Whitney Ashley (J.W. North HS) also took first place in the shot put invitational with a distance of 39' 1", which was the only throw she was able to register, as she fouled on the other three.

    Joining Ashley at the top of the list in the shot put were sophomores Maria Rodriguez (Bell HS) and NaShawnda Grant (Santa Fe HS), who tied for third place at 37' 1/2". Ashley came in third place in the discus invitational at 140' 1", while sophomore Jarvina McClain (El Rancho HS) posted a distance of 133' 11", good for fourth place. In the javelin invitational, freshman Karen Guravska (El Dorado HS) turned in a third place finish with a throw of 120' 4", while Webb came in fourth place in the 100-meter hurdles invitational with a time of 14.72.

    The Falcons will now compete in the Occidental Distance on Friday at 3:00 p.m., while others will take part in the Bakersfield Relays over the weekend.
